Una delle migliori scrittrici al mondo secondo me, adoro Jodi Ellen Malpas ed ogni suo libro. Mi ha fatto innamorare della sua penna la trilogia This Man e non mi perdo alcuna sua nuova uscita. The American e’ l’ultimo libro, il quinto, della serie Unlawful men che ho letto interamente in lingua originale inglese.
In Italia e’ uscito solo il primo per ora in casa Newton Compton dal titolo Attrazione senza regole – The Brit
Mi è piaciuta l’intera serie da morire. Sembra la stesura di un film d’azione americano. Questi “super hero” uomini indistruttibili della mala vita di Miami che riescono ad amare senza freni le loro donne arrivate all’improvviso nelle loro vite, grazie alle quali cambieranno tante cose ,ma in ogni libro non abbandoneranno il loro “lavoro nero” che li porta a continui scontri pericolosissimi con i loro nemici russi, messicani e fantasmi del passato…Nei primi due libri abbiamo conosciuto Danny The Brit e James The Enigma e le loro rispettive donne. Dal terzo libro la storia di tutti i componenti della banda- famiglia viene narrata da più POV cioè da Danny, James,Rose e Beau. Con questo quinto libro invece si aggiungono i POV di Brad , cugino e braccio destro di Danny che abbiamo già conosciuto al suo fianco nelle battaglie illegali contro i loro nemici a Miami e non solo, e Pearl che viene salvata dal traffico umano dai tre uomini e i loro fedeli compagni di banda nel quarto libro. Nonostante dal titolo The American il nome di Brad nella mala vita , sembra che si parli solo di lui e della sua giovanissima Pearl, in realtà continua la storia di tutti i componenti della “famiglia “ della” Black’s villa” . Prosegue quindi la lotta ai nemici storici non ancora annientati in quel di Miami per poi terminare finalmente in pace sull’isola di Santa Lucia che avevamo già conosciuto precedentemente.
La scrittura della Malpas è perfetta, impeccabile, calza a pennello ogni singolo termine usato dai suoi personaggi . E’ bravissima sia sul lato “azione e delirio” della storia sia nei momenti di intensa passione .Mi è piaciuto tantissimo l’ alternare dei sei POV dei protagonisti, cosa incredibile da gestire per un’autrice , ma Jodi Ellen ne esce più che vincitrice.
Sembra quasi un film d’azione più che un romanzo: alta tensione , continui cambi di ritmo , un’intreccio degno di un giallo che fino alla fine ci terrà col fiato sospeso e un sacco di dubbi irrisolti. Le vite di moltissimi personaggi già noti dai precedenti libri della serie si snodano ad alata velocità tra le righe sotto i nostri occhi non lasciandoci via di scampo se non leggere fino alla fine. Ci saranno tanti momenti drammatici ma tantissimi altri teneri e romantici, a volte anche comici.
Ho amato sia Brad che la giovane ma tosta Pearl . La loro attrazione inequivocabile li porterà ad odiarsi e amarsi allo stesso tempo ma la differenza di età sarà un grande ostacolo e non solo. Pearl si scoprirà avere un passato molto triste e crudo, dal quale cerca di scappare e in cui non vuol coinvolgere la famiglia dove ha trovato rifugio dopo il suo salvataggio. Ma la storia sarà molto complicata e il passato inglese di Pearl verrà a farle visita nel presente a Miami. Una ragazza di ventun’anni indistruttibile sia fisicamente che moralmente della quale si innamora perdutamente lo spietato Brad che avrà anche un’altra inaspettata sorpresa in questo ultimo libro. La bellissima Pearl dai capelli rossi , “rosso” parola che segnerà tutto il libro , il “rosso” che vede Brad non solo nei capelli della ragazza ma anche della rabbia focosa che spesso gli scaturisce nel petto dai repentini pericoli e attacchi che si susseguono nella loro vita.
Non posso svelarvi troppo per cui mi auguro che leggiate tutta la serie e sono sicura che la troverete strepitosa. Degna di essere portata sul grande schermo nella speranza che i film gli rendano giustizia perché per me questa serie è un capolavoro.
Danny e James mi sono sembrati molto” meno loro “ cioè più calmi , accondiscendenti, inclini alla battuta , meno “super hero” e più uomini normali se così li possiamo chiamare . Bellissima la figura di Rose, la moglie di Danny che qui gioca un gran bel ruolo da dura e in gamba come e’ sempre stata ma anche da super mamma!
Jodi Elllen Malpas non lascia nulla al caso , ci svelerà tutto l’ intrigo e ci delizierà con tante sorprese. Davvero un’ottimo lavoro come sempre per questa scrittrice inglese acclamata da tutta la società letteraria contemporanea.
Il libro è lungo e ce ne sarebbe un’ infinità di pezzi salienti da evidenziarvi per cui ve ne allego solo alcuni per stuzzicare la vostra curiosità.

One of the best writers in the world in my opinion, I adore Jodi Ellen Malpas and everyone of her books. I fell in love with her work by reading This Man trilogy and I don’t miss any of her new releases. The American is the last book, the fifth of the Unlawful Men series . I have read it entirely in the original English language.
In Italy just the first one has been published by Newton Compton entitled Attrazione senza regole – The Brit.
I enjoyed the whole series to death. It looks like an action movie . These “super heroes”, undestructables men of the Miami underworld who manage to love without restraint their women who suddenly arrive in their lives, thanks to whom they will change many things, but in each book they will not abandon their “black job” which leads them to continuous dangerous fights with their Russian and Mexican enemies and ghosts from the past… In the first two books we met Danny The Brit and James The Enigma and their respective women. Since the third book, the story of all the gang-family members is told from multiple POVs, Danny, James,Rose and Beau ones. This fifth book adds the POVs of Brad , Danny’s cousin and his right-hand man we have already met at his side in the illegal fights against their enemies in Miami and beyond, and Pearl who is rescued from human trafficking by the three men and their loyal gang mates in the fourth book.
Despite the fact that from the title The American , Brad’s nick name in the mafia life, it seems this book is about just him and his loving Pearl, actually the story is about all the members of the “family” of the “Black’s villa” . So the fight against the historical enemies not yet annihilated in Miami continues and finally ends in peace on St. Lucia island , which we had already knew before.
Malpas’ writing is perfect, impeccable, she fits every single term used by her characters like a glove. I loved the alternating six POVs of the main characters, which is unbelievable for an author to handle, but Jodi Ellen comes out more than a winner from this. She’s the best in the “ action” moments like in the passionate ones.
It almost seems more like an action movie than a novel: high tension, continuous changes of pace, a plot worthy of a detective story that will keep us in suspense until the end, and a lot of unresolved doubts. The lives of many characters already known from the previous books in the series unfold at high speed between the lines before our eyes, leaving us with no way out except to read till the end. There will be many dramatic moments but many more tender and romantic ones, sometimes even comic.
I loved both Brad and the young but tough Pearl . Their unequivocal attraction will lead them to hate and love each other at the same time but the agegap will be a big trouble and not just it. Pearl will turn out to have a very sad and raw past from which she tries to escape and in which she does not want to involve the family she found refuge in after her rescue. But the story will be very complicated and Pearl’s English past will come to visit her in the present in Miami. A twenty-one year old girl who is indestructible both physically and morally with whom the ruthless Brad falls madly in love and who will also have another unexpected surprise in this last book.
The beautiful red-haired Pearl, the “red” word that will mark the whole book, the “red” that Brad sees not only in the girl’s hair but also in the fiery rage that often erupts in his chest from the sudden dangers and attacks that occur in their lives.
I can’t show you more so I hope you read the whole series and I’m sure you will find it amazing. Worthy of being brought to the big screen hoping the movies respect the whole books because I think this series is a masterpiece.
Danny and James seemed to me much less ‘them’, calmer, accepting, inclined to banter, less ‘super hero’ and more normal men, if we can call them normal.
Very beautiful the figure of Rose, Danny’s wife who plays a great role here as a tough and smart woman she has always been but also as a super mum!
Jodi Elllen Malpas leaves nothing to chance, unravelling all the intrigue and delighting us with many surprises. Truly an excellent work as always for this British writer acclaimed by the entire contemporary literary society.
The book is long and there would be an infinite number of highlights to attach here fir you so I am attaching just a few to whet your curiosity.
