TRAMA
Quando mia nonna ha scoperto di non avere più molto da vivere, ha intrapreso un viaggio pazzesco: saltando giù dagli aeroplani e facendo immersioni con gli squali.
Dopo aver ripetutamente espresso la mia preoccupazione, la nonna mi ha bloccato, suo nipote, su SMS e social media, lasciandomi solo il numero della sua compagna di viaggio Eleanor.
Eleanor ha iniziato a mandarmi foto delle avventure della nonna. All’inizio sembrava gentile, ma quando ho tentato di convincerla a far ragionare la sua amica, mi ha detto dove potevo mettere il mio consiglio. Dopodiché, sono arrivate foto con commenti irriverenti, e io e Eleanor abbiamo discusso in più di un’occasione.
Quando ho sentito che i prossimi piani della nonna erano più pericolosi che mai, sono saltato su un aereo.
Dato che sono arrivato tardi, mi sono diretto al bar per un drink, pensando che l’avrei sorpresa la mattina.
Con mia grande gioia, ho incontrato una donna meravigliosa in cerca di una serata senza vincoli. Nora era proprio quello di cui avevo bisogno. Mi ha invitato a tornare nella sua stanza, dicendomi di darle dieci minuti di vantaggio. Ma quando sono andato a pagare il suo conto al bar, mi sono reso conto di quanto avesse bevuto. Per quanto volessi ignorarlo, non potevo. Così ho dato buca a Nora.
Sapevo che si sarebbe incazzata, ma sapevo anche che non l’avrei più rivista.
Invece è successo subito. Vale a dire, la mattina dopo, quando sono andato a incontrare mia nonna e la sua amica zitella malvagia. Perché la vecchia Eleanor si è rivelata essere la giovane Nora della sera precedente. E se prima pensavo che la donna mi odiasse, non era niente in confronto ad ora che era arrabbiata. O a quanto sarebbe stata infelice quando avrebbe realizzato che il loro party in due stesse per diventare un party in tre.
PLOT
When my grandmother found out she didn’t have long to live, she embarked on a crazy trip-jumping out of airplanes and scuba diving with sharks.
After I repeatedly voiced my concern, Gram blocked me—her own grandson—on text and social media, leaving me only her travel companion Eleanor’s number.
Eleanor started sending me pictures of Gram’s adventures. At first she seemed nice, but when I attempted to persuade her to talk some sense into her friend, she told me where I could stick my advice. After that, photos arrived with snarky comments, and Eleanor and I got into it on more than one occasion.
When I heard Gram’s upcoming plans were more dangerous than ever, I hopped on a plane.
Since I arrived late, I headed to the bar for a drink, figuring I’d surprise her in the morning.
To my delight, I met a gorgeous woman looking for a no-strings-attached night. Nora was just what I needed. She invited me back to her room, telling me to give her a ten-minute head start. But when I went to pay her bar tab, I realized how much she’d had to drink. As much as I wanted to ignore it, I couldn’t. So I stood Nora up.
I knew she’d be pissed, but I also knew I’d never see her again.
Except never came a little early. Namely, the next morning when I went to meet my grandmother and her evil-spinster friend. Because old Eleanor turned out to be young Nora from last night. And if I thought the woman disliked me before, that was nothing compared to how ticked-off she was now. Or how unhappy she was going to be that their party of two was about to become a party of three.

Oggi sono qui a raccontarvi SOMETHING UNEXPECTED di VI KEELAND.
Io sono entusiasta di questa lettura. Ho adorato la penna fluida e magistrale di VI KEELAND . Ho già letto altri suoi romanzi e non fa altro che confermare le aspettative, davvero un’ottima scrittrice. Le sue storie sembrano iniziare come i soliti romanzi d’amore e passione , ma in realtà si svelano essere molto intensi emotivamente e commoventi. Toccano l’anima trattando temi molto delicati come malattie terminali, amicizie e parentele profondamente scosse da questi eventi infausti che purtroppo la vita ci presenta anche troppo spesso.
Mi è piaciuto molto lo svolgersi della storia scritta al presente dal POV di entrambi i protagonisti Nora e Beck, i quali non lo ammettono a loro stessi, ma si innamorano a prima vista e punzecchiandosi non fanno altro che aggiungere legna ad un fuoco che arde.
“We don’t like each other enough to be friends, but we like each other enough to have sex?”
“Non è che ci piacciamo così tanto da essere amici, ma ci piacciamo abbastanza per fare sesso?”
“I couldn’t stop it. Wasn’t an option. Falling for you was a necessity.”
“Non posso farci niente. Non c’erano alternative. Innamorarmi di te era una necessità “
Una storia anche abbastanza divertente soprattutto nei primi capitoli, che poi però ci trasporta in momenti molto intensi , introspettivi e commoventi. Ambientato tra New York , LosAngeles, Bahamas, e vari luoghi soprattutto parchi naturali degli USA, infatti i due principali personaggi femminili, la nonna di Beck Louise e Nora , fanno un sacco di viaggi alla ricerca di avventure anche spericolate da vivere come se ogni giorno fosse l’ultimo, dato che all’anziana signora è stata diagnosticata la terza recidiva di un tumore e ha deciso di non curarsi ma di vivere appieno l’ultimo periodo della sua vita.
“Listen, I’ve had fun. Lived a good life. Loved hard. Helped raise two boys I couldn’t be prouder of. So if this is my last video, don’t worry, I’ll never be dead—not even when my heart stops pumping. Because you never truly die when you live in the souls of the people you leave behind.”
“Ascoltami, mi sono divertita. Ho vissuto una bella vita. Amato immensamente. Aiutato a crescere due ragazzi di cui non potrei essere più fiera. Quindi se questo è il mio ultimo video, non preoccuparti, io non sarò mai morta-neanche quando il mio cuore smetterà di battere. Perché non si è mai davvero morti quando si vive nell’anima delle persone che ci lasciamo dietro.”
VI KEELAND con questo romanzo ci insegna a godere di ogni giorno che ci regala la vita, perché potrebbe essere l’ultimo e che è meglio avere anche pochi attimi di gioia vera che tanti giorni in più ma senza quella gioia di vivere.

Hello everybody!
Today I’m here to tell you about VI KEELAND’s SOMETHING UNEXPECTED. I’m excited about this reading. I loved VI KEELAND’s smooth and brillant writing style.
I’ve already read other novels wrote by her and it only confirmed my expectations… that she truly is an excellent writer. Her novels seems to begin like the classic love and passion novels that we are used to, but in fact they turn out to be emotionally intense and moving.
Her books manages to touch the soul dealing with very delicate topics such as terminal illnesses and how it can affect the frienships and the relatives near the ill person.
Events that life present to us too often, unfortunately. I really like how the story developed, how it’s written in the present and how it’s narrated from the POV of both the main characters, Nora and Back, who don’t admit it to themselves but they fell in love the first time they met and by teasing each other they were just feeding a fire.
“We don’t like each other enough to be friends, but we like each other enough to have sex?”
A story that is also quite funny especially in the first chapters, even tho the story then proceeds to transport us to very intense, introspective and touching moments. Set between New York, Los Angeles, Bahamas and other various places, mostly natural parks in the USA, the two main characters, Beck’s grandmother Louise and Nora, actually travel a lot to find some reckless adventures that’s worth experiencing.
Moments to live like every daiy is the last one, in particular for the elder Louise, who was diagnosed with the the third tumor relapse and decided not to be treated but to fully live the last period of her life.
“Listen, Ive had fun. Lived a good life. Loved hard. Helped raise two boys I couldn’t be prouder of. So if this is my last video, don’t worry, I’ll never be dead—not even when my heart stops pumping. Because you never truly die when you live in the souls of the people you leave behind.”
VI KEELAND with this novel taught us to enjoy every day that life gives us, because it could be the last one and that is better to have a few moments of pure joy instead of having much more days without that happines.

A story to read in one breath, you will surely like SOMETHING UNEXPECTED by VI KEELAND
